The Kids Were Alright
Just caught this BBC article about one of the earliest "comics are from the devil" moral majority scares, in Glasgow in the 50's.
Highlights include - armed child "vampire hunters" scouting the city's necropolis for the "Gorbals Vampire," and farther down the article it also mentions that the "Iron Man" was actually a sort of boogeyman figure of legend.
I'm just impressed that the kids were up to the task of forming a posse and staking out a graveyard. At that age I don't think I did anything more ambitious than try and stay awake long enough to catch "Knight Rider." Then again, they probably spent a lot of the day working in mines or staving off tuberculosis with a bowl cabbage soup and a positive attitude, so I guess you had to get your kicks where you could.
